How to Spend One Day in Koh Lanta

Monkeys in Koh Lanta.

Sun-kissed Koh Lanta is the ideal Thai island for that perfect blend between convenience and blissful relaxation. It’s a large island, particularly compared to nearby Koh Phi Phi, and so is free from crowds, with plenty of space to stretch out on the beach or roam around exploring. It seems a shame to only limit yourself to one day in Koh Lanta, but if that’s all you’ve got, here’s what not to miss.

Have a hearty breakfast

You’ll likely be alighting from the ferry at the port in Saladan. If you don’t have much luggage, ignore the scrum of taxi drivers and simply walk straight down the main road for 10-15 minutes until you reach the unsuspecting Nang Sabai German Bakery. Sure, it’s not Thai cuisine, but with its huge range of delicious cakes, breads, and other European food, you’ll be sure to leave on a full stomach. (It also serves good coffee, which can often be hard to come by in Thailand!)

Hire a moped

Hiring a moped is a great way to see Koh Lanta. The roads might be bumpy in places, particularly to the south of the island, but it’s great to be able to explore on your own terms and at your own pace. Hit the west coast and stop off at any beaches or other viewpoints that take your fancy. Then head through lush rainforest until you reach the quiet and authentic east coast, where you’ll find a few small settlements and the historic Old Town overlooking the sea.

Hit the beach

Koh Lanta is famous for its fantastic array of stunning, unspoilt beaches. The bays tend to get more quiet and secluded the further south you go, but in terms of simply lazing around, swimming, and sunset strolling, Klong Dao Beach, the nearest to the port at Saladan and the appropriately named Long Beach further along, are both ideal. Also seek out Kantiang Bay, widely regarded as one of the best beaches in Thailand, and the quiet and secluded Nui Beach.

Eat, drink, relax

It’s fair to say that some of the more tourist-focused restaurants in Koh Lanta tend to serve rather disappointing food. The best food on the island can be found at inexpensive, family-run places that look a bit shabby but are unparalleled when it comes to deliciously authentic Thai food. If there are locals eating there, it’s a pretty safe bet that the food won’t disappoint. After dinner, settle back in a beach-side bar and reward yourself with a few drinks as you watch the sun glide into the Andaman Sea. Koh Lanta sunsets really are hard to beat.
